Abstract:

This presentation will provide an overview of policies and programs that have been implemented by NSW Land and Housing Corporation to improve the energy and water efficiency of NSW social housing over the past decade. Energy efficiency programs include retrofitting ceiling insulation, efficient hot water systems, LED lighting and solar photovoltaic systems. Water efficiency programs include retrofitting showerheads, dual flush toilets, rainwater tanks and water leak detection programs. Partnerships formed with Government agencies, utilities and research organisations that deliver programs which reduce energy and water costs for low income and socially disadvantaged communities shall also be examined.
The presentation will explore whole-of-life costs and benefits of energy and water efficiency for the design, upgrade and maintenance of social housing dwellings. Challenges in relation to landlord and tenant relationships in designing and implementing energy and water efficiency programs will also be explored.
